How to stop paying Klaviyo for spam bot accounts

Fake Shopify sign-ups become billable Klaviyo profiles, and the ones that start a checkout get your abandoned-cart emails. Here's what they cost, how to find them, and how to suppress them so they drop off your bill.

Short answer

Klaviyo bills by active profiles: every profile with an email address that isn't suppressed or unsubscribed, even if it never subscribed. Fake accounts from bot sign-ups and abandoned checkouts count, and they get your abandoned-cart flows. To stop paying for them, suppress them in Klaviyo. Unsubscribing or deleting them in Shopify doesn't reach Klaviyo.

Key takeaways

  • Suppressed profiles don't count toward your Klaviyo bill. Profiles marked “never subscribed” do, as long as they have an email address.
  • A bot that types an email into your checkout becomes a Klaviyo profile and can get every email in your abandoned-cart flow.
  • Unsubscribing a customer in Shopify doesn't unsubscribe them in Klaviyo, and deleting them in Shopify doesn't delete the Klaviyo profile.
  • Shopify customer tags sync to Klaviyo as the Shopify Tags property. Tag your bot accounts in Shopify and you can segment and suppress them in Klaviyo.
  • Just past 10,000 active profiles, every 500 extra profiles adds $25 a month to Klaviyo's Email plan. 3,000 bot profiles can double a 10,000-profile store's bill.
  • A lower profile count lowers the bill at the next billing cycle, and only if you turn on auto-downgrade or change plans.

Why do spam accounts count toward your Klaviyo bill?

Since February 18, 2025, Klaviyo has priced its plans by active profiles. Klaviyo counts any profile it can email as active. That includes people who subscribed, and people who never opted in but gave an email by placing an order or starting a checkout. Suppressed and unsubscribed profiles are the only ones that don't count.

Bots get in through the same doors as shoppers:

  • Account and newsletter forms. Bots fill in your store's create-account and newsletter forms. Each one becomes a Shopify customer, Shopify syncs customer profiles to Klaviyo in real time, and sign-ups that tick the marketing box also land on your Klaviyo list.
  • Checkout. A bot that enters an email at checkout triggers Klaviyo's Started Checkout event, which creates a profile whether or not the address ever subscribed. Klaviyo warns that bots sometimes use a real person's email here.
  • Pop-ups and footer forms. Klaviyo and third-party sign-up forms are a common target, especially ones that show a discount code right away. Klaviyo calls a flood of fake form submissions “list bombing.”

Most of these accounts never place an order, and they don't age out on their own. Klaviyo doesn't suppress a profile because it looks fake. Until you suppress it, it stays on your bill.

Bot accounts tend to look alike. Look for:

  • Many new accounts with the same name, like a run of accounts all named “James Anderson”
  • Links or promo text typed into the first or last name field
  • Bursts of sign-ups within a few minutes, often overnight
  • Throwaway (disposable) email domains and random-looking addresses
  • The same first and last name, like “Alex Alex”
  • No orders, ever

Why do bots get your abandoned-cart emails?

Abandoned-checkout flows trigger on Klaviyo's Started Checkout event. Klaviyo lets you email never-subscribed profiles who left an email at checkout, so unless your flow filters them out, a bot that starts a checkout enters the flow like any shopper. If your flow has three emails, each bot can use three sends.

The waste shows up in four places:

  • Send limits. Each Email plan includes a monthly send allowance of about ten times its profile limit. Bot sends use it up.
  • SMS credits. If your checkout or forms collect phone numbers, bots that enter one can get your texts, and SMS is billed per message on top of the Email plan.
  • Deliverability. Fake addresses hard-bounce, and real addresses that bots submit produce spam complaints from people who never visited your store. Lower sender reputation means fewer of your real customers' emails reach the inbox. Klaviyo monitors bounce and spam rates and can disable an account that keeps sending to bad addresses until it speaks with the owner.
  • Reporting and ads. Bots drag down your abandoned-cart recovery rate and click data, and they end up in any Klaviyo segment you sync to ad platforms.

Klaviyo does catch part of this. It suppresses addresses that hard-bounce, and it skips sending to any address that has hard-bounced anywhere on Klaviyo's network (“Suspicious Email” in a flow's skip reasons). A bot address that accepts mail, or a real person's address, still gets through.

How much do spam accounts cost on Klaviyo?

The direct cost is the difference between the Email plan you're on and the one you'd need without bots. When a paid account's active profiles go over its plan limit, Klaviyo moves it up a tier at the start of the next billing cycle. Free accounts work differently: over 250 active profiles, you can't send messages or turn flows on until you're back under the limit.

Example: a 10,000-profile store

A store with 9,800 real profiles pays $150 a month. Add 3,000 bot profiles and it has 12,800, which is the $300 tier. The bots cost $150 a month, or $1,800 a year, and none of them will buy anything. If 1,000 of them also started a checkout and the abandoned-cart flow has three emails, that's 3,000 wasted sends on top.

Example: a 45,000-profile store

45,000 real profiles costs $650 a month. With 6,000 bot profiles the store has 51,000 and pays $790 a month. The bots cost $140 a month, or $1,680 a year.

How to find spam accounts in Shopify and Klaviyo

In Shopify

  1. In Customers, create a segment of accounts added in the last 90 days with no orders:
    number_of_orders = 0 AND customer_added_date >= -90d
  2. Sort or scan by name. Same-name runs, links in names and matching first and last names stand out quickly.
  3. Check sign-up times. Dozens of accounts in a few minutes is a burst, not a sale.
  4. Tag the accounts you confirm, for example with bot. You'll use that tag in Klaviyo.

Don't tag on a single signal. A disposable email domain on its own isn't proof, because some real shoppers use them. Leave out anyone who has placed an order.

In Klaviyo

Build a segment to review, not one to suppress right away. A starting definition:

  • What someone has done: Placed Order zero times over all time
  • And any of: First Name contains http or www, Email contains a disposable domain you've seen in your list, or Shopify Tags contains bot

Klaviyo segments can't compare a first name to a last name or spot a burst of same-name sign-ups, so use this alongside the Shopify check. Also look at the skipped recipients on your abandoned-cart flow. Profiles skipped as “Suspicious Email” have hard-bounced somewhere on Klaviyo's network.

How to suppress spam accounts in Klaviyo, step by step

Suppression is the step that changes your bill. A suppressed profile can't receive marketing emails, stops counting toward your plan, and keeps its history in case you need to reverse it. This method uses a Shopify customer tag as the source of truth, so you review accounts once, in Shopify.

  1. Tag the bot accounts in Shopify. Use one tag for every confirmed bot account, for example bot. Shopvibe adds shopvibe-bot when you approve a cleanup batch.
  2. Create a segment in Klaviyo. Under Audience › Lists & segments, create a segment with Properties about someone › Shopify Tags, set the type to List, and choose contains bot. Klaviyo's Shopify integration stores all of a customer's tags in this one property.
  3. Suppress the current members. On the Lists & segments page, open the action menu next to the segment and choose Suppress current members.
  4. Suppress new bots automatically. Create a flow triggered when someone joins the segment, and add a webhook action that calls Klaviyo's bulk suppression API (settings below). Klaviyo publishes this pattern in its own solution recipes.
  5. Keep tagged bots out of your flows. Add the flow filter Shopify Tags doesn't contain bot to your abandoned-checkout, added-to-cart, browse-abandonment and welcome flows. It covers the gap between a bot getting tagged and getting suppressed.
  6. Turn on auto-downgrade. Suppressing profiles doesn't change your plan by itself. In Klaviyo's billing preferences, choose auto-downgrade so the account drops to the lower tier at the start of the next billing cycle.

      }
    }
  }
}

Create a private API key with only the profiles:write and subscriptions:write scopes. A segment-triggered flow takes each profile once, and only people who join after the flow goes live, which is why step 3 handles the accounts already in the segment.

Review before you suppress. If you remove a manual suppression, Klaviyo won't let you manually suppress that profile again for 90 days. Make sure the tag is only on accounts you've confirmed.

Unsubscribe, suppress or delete: what lowers your Klaviyo bill?

What each action does to a bot profile in Klaviyo
ActionStops Klaviyo emailsOff your Klaviyo billCan be undone
Unsubscribe in ShopifyNo, it doesn't carry over to KlaviyoNoYes
Delete the customer in ShopifyNo, the Klaviyo profile staysNoNo
Suppress in KlaviyoYesYesYes, but re-suppressing is locked for 90 days
Delete the profile in KlaviyoYesYesNo, and it can come back as a new profile

For bots, suppress. Deleting removes the profile's history, and if the same address shows up again through another sign-up or checkout, it comes back as a new profile that counts toward your bill. Suppression keeps the record and keeps it off your bill.

How to keep new bot sign-ups out of Klaviyo

  • Keep Shopify's hCaptcha on. It's on by default for contact, newsletter and comment forms and for the login, create account and password recovery pages. Check it in Online Store › Preferences › Spam protection.
  • Use double opt-in on your Klaviyo list. Bots don't click confirmation links, so they never join the list your campaigns go to.
  • Don't reveal a discount code on submit. Forms that show a code instantly attract bots that collect codes. Email the code instead.
  • Delay the first abandoned-cart email. An hour or more gives tagging and suppression time to run, and Klaviyo skips suppressed profiles when the email sends.
  • Pair a bot blocker with cleanup. Captchas and blockers cut volume but don't stop everything, so plan to clean up what gets through.

Doing it with Shopvibe

Disclosure: Shopvibe is our app. You can follow every step above without it.

Shopvibe does the Shopify half of this guide. It scans 90 days of sign-ups, then runs daily and a few minutes after each new sign-up. It groups likely fake accounts into batches by pattern (same-name bursts, links in names, sign-up bursts, throwaway and random-looking emails) and shows why each one was flagged. Customers with orders are never touched. When you approve a batch, it tags the accounts shopvibe-bot and unsubscribes them from email and SMS marketing in Shopify.

To carry that into Klaviyo, use shopvibe-bot as the tag in steps 2 to 5 above. Every batch you approve then gets suppressed in Klaviyo too. Native Klaviyo suppression in Shopvibe is planned.

Shopvibe's undo removes the tag and restores marketing consent in Shopify, but it doesn't unsuppress the profile in Klaviyo. Do that in Klaviyo, and keep the 90-day rule in mind.

The Free plan includes 10 cleanup batches a month. Launch ($29 a month, with a 14-day free trial) adds unlimited batches, card-testing order cleanup, and deleting cleaned-up accounts.

Frequently asked questions

Do suppressed profiles count toward my Klaviyo bill?

No. Suppressed and unsubscribed profiles don't count toward your Klaviyo plan. Every other profile with an email address does.

Do never-subscribed profiles count toward my Klaviyo bill?

Yes. Klaviyo counts any profile it can email, and it can email never-subscribed profiles, such as people who started a checkout without opting in to marketing.

Does unsubscribing a customer in Shopify unsubscribe them in Klaviyo?

No. Klaviyo's help center says a profile unsubscribed in Shopify is not unsubscribed in Klaviyo. To stop emails and billing, suppress the profile in Klaviyo.

If I delete fake customers in Shopify, are they deleted in Klaviyo?

No. Deletions don't sync in either direction between Shopify and Klaviyo. The Klaviyo profile stays and keeps counting toward your plan until you suppress or delete it in Klaviyo.

Should I suppress or delete bot profiles in Klaviyo?

Suppress them. Suppression takes them off your bill and out of your sends, and it can be undone. Deleting is permanent, and the same address can come back later as a new, billable profile.

When will suppressing profiles lower my Klaviyo bill?

At the start of your next billing cycle, if your active profile count qualifies for a lower tier and you've turned on auto-downgrade or changed your plan. Suppressing profiles doesn't change your plan by itself.

Why do bots sign up and start checkouts on my Shopify store?

Common reasons are testing stolen card numbers (card testing), harvesting discount codes from sign-up forms, posting spam links in name fields, and flooding a real person's inbox by signing their address up to many stores (list bombing).

Can I stop abandoned-cart emails going to bots without suppressing them?

Partly. A flow filter such as Shopify Tags doesn't contain bot keeps tagged bots out of a flow, but they still count toward your Klaviyo bill until they're suppressed.
