Shopify Shipping label adjustments: why you were charged and how to dispute them
Carriers re-check every package after it ships and bill the difference, sometimes weeks later. Here's where Shopify shows label adjustments, why they happen, how to dispute a wrong one, and how to stop paying for the right ones.
Short answer
A Shopify Shipping label adjustment is a charge or credit the carrier applies after scanning your package, when it didn't match the label you bought: usually the weight, dimensions, package type or mail class. It shows in the order's timeline and on your next Shopify bill, often days or weeks after the sale. To dispute one, contact Shopify Support quickly with the order number and photos of the package on a scale and next to a tape measure.
Key takeaways
- Shopify calls adjustments standard industry practice: the carrier checks the label against the real package and charges or credits you the difference.
- The common causes are the wrong weight, the wrong dimensions, a flat-rate label on a weight-based box (or the reverse), and the wrong mail class. Address-correction and return-to-sender fees are billed the same way.
- Adjustments land in the order Timeline and on your next Shopify bill, not when you buy the label.
- Shopify's Shipping labels by order report compares what the customer paid with what the label cost, but it leaves adjustments out.
- There's no published dispute deadline. Shopify says to contact Support as soon as possible, because late disputes might not be reviewed.
- Most adjustments are preventable with real product weights and saved package sizes rounded up to the next whole inch.
What is a Shopify Shipping label adjustment?
When you buy a label in Shopify, the price is based on what you told it: the package's weight, its dimensions, the package type and the service. Carriers measure packages again as they move through their network. If the carrier's scan doesn't match the label, it bills the difference to Shopify, and Shopify bills it to you as a label adjustment. If you overpaid, the adjustment is a credit.
Because the carrier applies the adjustment after it scans the package, Shopify bills it separately from the original label. Shopify's help center says this can be “days or weeks after the original purchase.” The package is usually delivered as normal, so nothing about the order looks wrong until the bill arrives.
Why did I get a shipping label adjustment?
Shopify's billing page lists the reasons carriers give. Most of them come down to the label not matching the box.
| Reason | What happened | How to prevent it |
|---|---|---|
| Weight doesn't match | The package weighed more than the label said. | Weigh packed orders, or set product weights that include packing material. |
| Dimensions don't match | The box was bigger than the saved package, so it billed at a higher dimensional weight. | Save the boxes you really use, rounded up to the next whole inch. |
| Wrong package type | A flat-rate label went on a weight-based box, or the reverse. | Match the package type on the label to the box. |
| Wrong mail class | The package went over the weight limit for the service on the label. | Check the service's limits before you buy. |
| Packaging not allowed | The package wasn't fully enclosed in cardboard, or was a type the service doesn't support, such as a tube. | Use packaging the service accepts. |
| Contents restricted | The contents broke the mail class's rules. | Check restrictions for the service. |
| Address correction | The carrier fixed a wrong or incomplete address. | Check addresses before you buy the label. |
| Return to sender | The package came back to you. | Same as above. Undeliverable addresses are the usual cause. |
| Over maximum size or weight | The package was over the carrier's limits. | Use freight or another service for very large items. |
Reasons from Shopify's help center. Shopify also lists fees for shipment preparation and non-customs paperwork.
Over-maximum fees are the expensive ones. Shopify's own example is a fee of more than $875 USD for a UPS package over 150 lb.
Never reuse a label. Shopify warns that reprinting or reusing a label the carrier has already scanned may be treated as fraud. That can bring large adjustments and limit your ability to buy that carrier's labels.
Where to find label adjustments in Shopify
- On the order. Open the order in Shopify admin and look at the Timeline. The adjustment appears with the carrier's reason.
- On your bill. Go to Settings › Billing › Bills, open the bill, find the Shipping section and click the number of shipping fees. You'll see a breakdown by order.
- In an export. Export a bill as CSV or PDF, or export your billing history as a CSV by email. A statement of charges covers any range in the last 90 days, including shipping fees. On Shopify Plus, export from the organization's Billing page.
- In Analytics. Shopify's analytics fields include Average shipping label adjustment costs and a Shipping label adjustment ID dimension, which you can add to a custom report.
Orders sold through Shopify Managed Markets (formerly Markets Pro) are different: since October 2023, their label adjustments appear in Payouts, with details in the order timeline.
How to dispute a Shopify Shipping label adjustment
If you bought the label in Shopify, you dispute through Shopify, not the carrier.
- Read the reason. The order timeline shows what the carrier changed: weight, dimensions, package type or a fee.
- Compare it with the real package. Check the label's weight, dimensions and service against what you shipped. If you can, pack an identical order.
- Collect evidence. Photograph the sealed package next to a tape measure on each side. For a weight dispute, photograph it on a scale with the reading visible. Note the tracking number.
- Contact Shopify Support. Send the order number, the adjustment reason and your evidence. Do it as soon as you notice: Shopify says timelines vary by carrier and late disputes might not be reviewed.
- Fix the cause either way. If the adjustment was right, update the product weight or saved package so it doesn't happen again. If the dispute is denied, the charge stays.
For context, USPS's own Automated Package Verification program, which checks postage on Click-N-Ship and PC Postage labels, gives shippers 60 days from the notification to dispute. Its top causes are the same: incorrect weight, incorrect dimensions, and a service that doesn't match the packaging. Shopify doesn't publish a window, so don't wait for a monthly review.
If you buy labels on your own UPS or FedEx account instead of through Shopify Shipping, the adjustments come on the carrier's invoice and you dispute them with the carrier. Our guide to UPS and FedEx invoice adjustments covers that process.
Why adjustments don't show up in your shipping margin
Three things make adjustments easy to miss:
- Checkout already happened. The customer paid for shipping weeks before the adjustment existed. Nothing collects it from them.
- They're billed on a different line. The original label and the adjustment are separate charges, often on different bills.
- Reports leave them out. Shopify's Shipping labels by order report shows the shipping price charged to the customer next to the label cost, which is useful. But it excludes adjustments, return labels, voided labels and labels bought outside Shopify.
So a store can look like it breaks even on shipping in its reports while the adjustments push it under. To see the real number, add each order's adjustments from your bills to its label cost. Our guide to finding shipping undercharges walks through it.
How to prevent label adjustments
- Give every product a real weight. Shopify treats a product with no weight as weightless, so both the label and checkout rate come out too light.
- Save the boxes you actually use. Shopify's own tip is to round measurements up to the nearest whole inch, because carriers usually round up when they scan.
- Check the default package. A package assigned to a variant only applies to single-item orders. Multi-item orders use your store's default package, unless you've set packed product sizes and a saved box fits.
- Count the package weight. For weight-based rates, Shopify adds the package weight to the product weights. Make the saved package weight match the box and filler you use.
- Match the package type to the label. Flat-rate boxes need flat-rate labels, and weight-based boxes need weight-based labels.
- Validate addresses before you buy. Address corrections are billed per package.
Label adjustments vs. voided labels
Voiding is for labels you didn't use. In Shopify you can void a label that's no more than 30 days old and has no tracking events, up to 250 at a time. The cost comes back as a credit on your Shopify account for future labels, not a refund to your card. USPS First Class Mail labels can't be voided, and a few carriers have their own rules. An adjustment is the opposite case: a label that was used, then billed again.
Doing it with Shopvibe
Disclosure: Shopvibe is our app. You can follow every step above without it.
Shopvibe reads your orders and Shopify Shipping label costs, plus the Shopify bills you upload, and puts every label adjustment next to the order it belongs to. Each adjustment shows what checkout charged, what the label cost, and what was added later, grouped by cause. When the cause is your own data, such as a product with no weight or a missing box size, Shopvibe names the product so you can fix it.
On the Launch plan, it builds a dispute packet with the tracking numbers, invoice lines and declared versus billed weight and dimensions, ready to send. Shopvibe only reads your store; it never changes it. The Free plan audits 60 days of orders.
Frequently asked questions
Why was I charged a shipping label adjustment on Shopify?
The carrier scanned your package after it shipped and found it didn't match the label, usually because the weight, dimensions, package type or mail class were different. Shopify bills you the difference as a label adjustment. Address-correction and return-to-sender fees are also billed this way.
Where do I see shipping label adjustments in Shopify?
In the order's Timeline, with the carrier's reason, and on your next Shopify bill. In Settings › Billing, open a bill, go to the Shipping section and click the number of shipping fees to see each order.
How long after shipping can a label adjustment appear?
Days or weeks. The carrier applies the adjustment after it scans the package, so it's billed separately from the original label and often lands on a later Shopify bill.
Can I dispute a Shopify Shipping label adjustment?
Yes. Contact Shopify Support with the order number, the adjustment reason, and photos of the sealed package next to a tape measure and on a scale. Shopify doesn't publish a fixed deadline but says to contact Support as soon as possible, because late disputes might not be reviewed.
Can a label adjustment be a credit?
Yes. If the carrier finds you paid more than the package needed, the adjustment is a credit. Most adjustments are charges, because labels are more often bought too light or too small than too heavy.
Is a label adjustment the same as voiding a label?
No. Voiding cancels an unused label, and the cost comes back as a credit on your Shopify account. A label can be voided if it's no more than 30 days old and has no tracking events. USPS First Class Mail labels can't be voided. An adjustment is a later charge or credit on a label that was used.
Do Shopify's shipping label reports include adjustments?
No. The Shipping labels by order and Shipping labels over time reports exclude adjustments, return labels, voided labels and labels not bought in Shopify. Add adjustments from your bills to see the real cost of each order.
